Aim of DARE to Drive to Survive

DARE to Drive to Survive aims to reduce death and injury that result from drinking and driving.  It will do this by helping young people to make informed, responsible decisions, and to support each other by standing by those decisions.

Young people need help to make these decisions.  As part of this programme we hope that teenagers will be able to discuss drink/drive issues at home, or with another adult they trust.

DARE to Drive to Survive is designed to be taught by a classroom teacher working in partnership with a trained police education officer.  Each partner brings their own knowledge and experience to the classroom environment in which these issues can be looked at.

The police education officer is a respected member of the community.  He or she is familiar with the laws relating to this topic and has practical experience of the consequences that may result if they are broken.  The police education office has detailed knowledge of the Drink/Drive laws for under twenties and the compulsory breath testing laws and their enforcement.

In a Nutshell!

DARE to Drive to Survive assists young people to:

  • Make informed decisions when faced with a situation involving drinking and driving.
  • Cope with social pressures associated with drinking and driving.
  • Identify hazards and help prevent crashes on the roads.
  • Accept responsibility and increasing independence as new drivers.
  • Find out about the agencies that exist that can offer help e.g. SADD.
  • Be informed about current legislation relating to drinking and driving.

Parent/Caregiver and Community Involvement

It is important that parents/caregivers and adults close to students taking part in DARE to Drive to Survive are informed of the aims of the programme and the ways in which they can help and support these young people.

Young people are the products of the society in which we live.  They model the way they see adults behaving, including the behaviour associated with drinking and driving.

Our teenagers are more likely to behave responsibly if we do the same.

The programme asks adults to consider what they might like to modify or change about their behaviour regarding drinking and driving, and the associated pressures, so that they can be good role models.
